We live in an era where we find ourselves stressed very often. Stress keeps us under pressure both mentally and physically. Pressure turns into stress when we feel unable to cope with it. People have different ways of reacting to stress. One particular situation may make one feel stressed, while it might motivate another person. This is because the level of stress one faces depends on an individual’s personality pattern and perception on the situation itself. We have to identify the things that make us stressful; this list might include social positions, financial solvency, relationship matters, physical illnesses, working environment or any other daily life hassles. The severity of the stress depends on the gap between our need and desired accomplishment level, a level which is increasing day by day.
Stress causes many physical and emotional problems, to name a few: irritability, lack of concentration, sleep disturbances, headaches, impatience, increase or decrease in appetite, lack of drive or motivation which may lead to anger issues, despair, lack of self esteem and constant disappointment. All these factors lead us to becoming demotivated very easily and hence cause us to develop depression. When we find ourselves in persistent stress we need to recognize the cause and need to work to get rid of it. As a human being in this material life, we are destined to face stressful events. This reality has been decreed by our creator in order to make us stronger as well as more experienced as we walk through life. It is up to us how we choose to deal with stress, either proactively or in a negative and faltering way, which will lead to even more stress. The choice is ours, given to us by our creator, to make decisions and face life as it comes.
There is no quick fix method for stress management. We need to work on it on a daily basis. We may opt to get expert advice from professionals when necessary. First we need to set priorities according to the different stages in our lives. It may prove to be easier if we make checklists on what causes us stress; a list of factors that trigger stress. We can try out relaxation methods in addition to discussing with trusted individuals regarding situations in which we may need help.
Ramadan is coming, Allah has made this month blissful for us. If we can work on creating and establishing a strategic method for worship during this blessed month, we may be able to free ourselves from many of the daily stress factors that put us down. Starting with a checklist of stress causing factors, let’s list out the lowest stress provoking factors then work our way up to the highest. We often forget to think rationally and create stress or pressure over trivial matters in life. We continuously compare our lives with those who have it better off than us, and thus feel desperate and unappreciative. Many a times these feelings arise due to financial matters, work related problems, relationship problems, career or daily life hassles. Logical thinking can help us change our perception about these things. Regarding relationship problems, if we can’t value the relationship and prefer our own ego, it will become difficult to sustain any relationship. Contrary to this, need to learn to cherish our relationships, overlook and forgive as necessary. There are often certain trigger factors that create stressful environments even before the real stress itself. We need to figure out these factors and calm ourselves by using different methods such as relaxation exercises, prayers, healthy eating, etc. We need to choose someone close who can keep our secrets’, who can perhaps calm our souls and at the same time be a strong support in our times of need. Any close friend(s), relative(s) or even a psychotherapist can help us on this end. Through all of this, we need to keep in mind that Allah, our creator, is our best support and guide from the beginning until the end.
During Ramadan, it is a special time to train ourselves with the guidance of Allah in order to help ourselves overcome weaknesses. It would really help if we keep ourselves close to our creator in every way possible, starting from prayers, fasting, charities, spending quality time with family members, focusing on the priorities of life, feeling content with whatever we have, increasing in patience, etc. All these habits will help us realize which belongings we really want in our life. Once we come to terms with this answer, we will not stress ourselves as much as before. If we develop being thankful, we will refrain from complaining about the things we never had. At the end of Ramadan we will find ourselves with a refined personality, with a resolve to struggle more and thus become less stressed in this momentary world. Not to mention, we have professionals nowadays who can assist us in coping with stress both in the religious perspective as well as the psychological perspective. They are ready to help us in every way, it’s on us to take the first step towards seeking their help.
Those who become stressed very often cannot lead a life of contentment, nor can they focus on working for the hereafter. Let us all take the opportunity to become stress free this coming Ramadan and make our lives filled with peace and serenity.
